Nimis and Arx

In the nature reserve at Kullaberg stand the works Nimis and Arx by the artist Lars Vilks. Nimis is a maze of tunnels and towers built from driftwood, rising up to 25 metres into the air. Vilks began work on Nimis in the early 1980s and has since been in prolonged conflict with the authorities because the artwork was constructed within a protected nature reserve. Despite these disputes, it is a popular tourist attraction, and thousands of visitors make their way to the site each year to experience it in person.

Next to Nimis stands Arx, a “book” built of stone and concrete. The stones are numbered like pages and together form one of the heaviest books in history, “Arx – a Book about the Unspeakable”, weighing an impressive 150 tonnes spread across 352 pages.

The route to Nimis and Arx can be challenging and is at times quite steep. Sturdy footwear and a bottle of water are essential. Small children and adults in poor physical condition should not attempt to reach the artworks on foot. Be aware that in bad weather both the path and the artworks themselves can be extremely slippery, increasing the risk of falls and injury. On a sunny, pleasantly warm day, however, a visit to the self-proclaimed state of Ladonien is an experience out of the ordinary.
